Candidate for Oshawa DDSB Trustee.
A couple of well known phrases are that ‘children are our future’ and ‘the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow’.
While I agree with these statements I wonder whether we stop to think about what those statements actually mean and what the implications of those statements SHOULD mean.
If we did, would we change
I don’t pretend to know all the answers however, I can promise that I will ask the tough and uncomfortable questions.
By being willing to listen, to question the status quo and have respectful discussions with people that hold different views, values and opinions, we will be in a better place to make wise choices.
This is what I will bring to the table as your Oshawa DDSB Trustee - because the decisions we make today will have long-term impacts and consequences in the lives of our kids & youth.
I will schedule time before every Trustee meeting to review and research the items on the agenda.
I will commit to researching the issues which are directly impacting our education system in Canada, Ontario and in the Region of Durham.
I am an advocate for Continuous Improvement - both professionally and personally.
I will commit to striving to continually improve in my role, in my communication, in my listening, in my understanding of the school board and in any other areas where I have influence.
I believe that it is important for Oshawa residents to be aware of what is being taught and decided for our kids & youth and for your voice to be heard.
I will commit to open and honest communication, to informing Oshawa residents of issues and decisions and to providing opportunities for Oshawa residents to voice their concerns to the best of my ability.
I am not afraid to ask questions to clarify my understanding of issues, comments and concerns.
I will commit to listening and understanding the perspectives of those I represent.
I love to learn and am curious about a wide range of topics. This helps me to view issues and topics through various lenses and helps me keep in check any bias I may bring to the table.
I will commit to continual learning.
I believe it is important to allow ourselves time to dream. It has also been discovered that allowing our mind the space and time to wander significantly improves our creative & critical thinking and our ability to problem-solve.
I will commit to maintaining healthy habits including mental, emotional, spiritual and physical habits.

"Elizabeth (Liz) and I [were] Board members providing governance and leadership at the Community Development Council Durham (CDCD) in Ajax, ON. Liz is very goal oriented and believes in structure, processes and practices that supports efficiency and effectiveness all while getting the job done. She is very hands-on, yet utilizes her experience to support the achievement of strategic goals and priorities. Her skills in marketing, lean management and process-mapping are hard to find and well-appreciated in the non-profit sector".

Liz helped plan, organize and facilitate a ESG workshop for EfficiencyOne’s Board of Directors and Executive Leadership Team. The event was held virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Liz did a great job keeping all of us engaged and focused. She followed up with a written summary of observations which allowed us to quickly identify our priorities for implementing an ESG framework.

Liz is a terrific leader of our not-for-profit Chair Peer Forums. She has awesome Zoom skills that are so critical in this remote world but also great design ability to make the experience for our group as close to being together as possible. The most recent example being “Advancing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion” which was a terrific discussion on a critical topic. Thanks so much Liz!
